Camp Waldo, an environmentally focused, nonprofit summer camp in southern West Virginia, is inviting campers to apply to join their three-week overnight camp session taking place between June 13- July 3, 2020. All rising 4th-7th graders (current 3rd– 6th graders) are invited to apply and the cost for the entire three-week session is only $200, less than 10% of the actual cost of the camp. Camp Waldo will even reduce or waive the fee for any family that cannot afford it.
Camp Waldo is in Summers County, West Virginia on the banks of the Greenbrier River. The camp is sponsored by Appalachian Headwaters, a nonprofit organization focusing on restoring native forests on mined lands, community beekeeping, native plant horticulture, and environmental education.
Camp Waldo hopes to connect kids from the region with the environment through outdoor learning and exploration. Campers engage in ecology and environment programs daily, learning to understand the ecosystem and to become wise stewards of natural resources. Campers will also partake in activities like creative writing, music, visual art, theater, basketball, soccer, archery, chess, yoga, gardening and beekeeping as well as camping, backpacking and paddle trips.
On grounds there is a large dining hall, stages, sports fields, a basketball court, archery range, a garden, a greenhouse, and honeybee yards. The camp plans to host 104 campers in their recently renovated cabins. There will be eight campers and two counselors per cabin. Applications are open now and registration begins in March.
