HagerstownBMX and Visit Hagerstown have announced that grant funding has been received to make necessary upgrades to the BMX track at Fairgrounds Park in Hagerstown. Upgrades to the track have allowed for the submission of a bid to host the National USA BMX event in the Summer of 2021, at the track. USA BMX is the governing organization for BMX leagues in the United States.

Funding from the State of Maryland, Washington County Government, City of Hagerstown, and Visit Hagerstown amounted to $245,000. The funds will provide for installation of lights, track upgrades, seating and other beautification items. These amenities are required by USA BMX to qualify as a host for a national event. Preliminary site visits to the track have been conducted by the governing organization. The economic impact expected from hosting this national event is estimated to be up to $2.5 million.

HagerstownBMX has been a tourism generator for Washington County since 1999. The organization hosts four statewide and regional races annually, bringing in approximately 1,200 riders and their families to each race from outside Washington County. The national event is expected to draw 600-800  riders and families, USA BMX staff and volunteers from across the United States. The bid is for a multiday event to be held the Summer of 2021, with planning assistance from the City of Hagerstown.

Visit Hagerstown – Washington County President, Dan Spedden, said, “I am excited that Delegate Corderman was successful in obtaining this grant through a Legislative Bond Initiative. The Washington County Commissioners and Hagerstown City Council have also substantially contributed to this project.” He added, “These are very trying times for the travel and tourism industry this BMX Track project and National Championship bid are a very bright spot in our industry’s future.”
