The forest service has two large tracts of land scheduled for logging in Tennessee’s Cherokee National Forest, both of which were being considered for roadless areas at one time. As part of the Beaverdam Creek timber sale, 500 acres of timber are scheduled to be cut from Iron Mountain. The mountain was part of a designated roadless area, but miles of road were built and hundreds of acres were logged in the site before the official safeguards protecting roadless areas were established in 2001. The new logging project amplifies this disregard for the quality of Iron Mountain.
The same can be said for the proposed Hogback Project, which calls for tree cutting and road building in an area surrounding the Big Frog Wilderness.
