A Georgia state court recently reversed a permit to build a new coal-fired power plant in Early County because of the developer’s failure to limit emissions of carbon dioxide. This is the first court decision in the country to deny a power plant permit because of CO2 emissions, which the Supreme Court recently ruled as a greenhouse gas causing pollutant.
A spokesperson for the Sierra Club predicts the Georgia court ruling will have a sweeping affect over many new coal-fired power plants in development across the country. The new plants will now have to consider their carbon dioxide emissions when applying for a permit.
