Climb over 100 steps up Sounding Knob Fire Tower for breathtaking aerial views and one of the best sunset spots in the area. George Washington and Jefferson National Forests feature even more miles to explore, including Shenandoah Mountain Trail. Cyclists should plan to visit for the annual Mountain Mama Road Bike Challenge—the first Saturday of August—for 10,000 feet of climbing over 105 miles, while anglers are sure to find a spot to reel in some mountain trout. Of course, a visit to Highland County wouldn’t be complete without a taste of the local southern maple treats found along the Virginia Maple Syrup Trail.
