During the early days of the pandemic, members of Virginia roots-rock outfit Chamomile and Whiskey spent time building a studio at a family cabin in the woods of Nelson County, Va.
Some of the first sounds from the refurbished space have surfaced with the new single “Hard Luck Dreams,” which premieres today at Blue Ridge Outdoors. The track, a wistful slice of country blues, comes from a collection of songs called “The A Frame Sessions Vol. 1.”
“I wrote this song in the early days of Covid, after we cancelled all of our tour dates and delayed the release of our last record,” says the band’s main singer and songwriter Koda Kerl. “With the downtime, I started fixing up a little cabin my brother built that had fallen into disrepair and we turned it into something of a recording studio.”
Accompanying the song—which will be released on streaming outlets on February 24—is a performance video shot live at the cabin. Additional tracks from the new project will be released individually as singles in the near future.
Chamomile and Whiskey’s last full-length album, “Red Clay Heart,” was produced by Ken Coomer (Wilco) and released back in the fall of 2020.
The band has a big hometown show on the horizon, performing at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, Va., on March 17. The group is also on the bill of the Red Wing Roots Music Festival, which takes place in the Shenandoah Valley in June.
