The North Fork Mountain Trail which is approximately 24 miles long is ideal for a 2 to 3-day backpacking trip that is full of wildlife and amazing scenery. One of the most popular destinations on North Fork Mountain Trail is Chimney Rock. This hidden gem in the Monongahela National Forest provides one of the best views in the state.
Not up for a multi-day trip, but you still want to see Chimney Rock? Start at the North Fork Trailhead on Smoke Hole Road, just off North Fork Highway not far from Cabins, West Virginia. It’s a strenuous 5.5-mile hike with an extra steep scramble right at the end, but the views from the top are worth the effort.
The Dolly Sods Wilderness Area has 47 miles of trails, many of which follow old railroad grades and logging roads. Some of the best views can be found on the 7.7 mile Rocky Ridge Trail. From this exposed ridgeline, you can look out for miles over Canaan Valley. A perfect trip for families or first-time backpackers is the 8.8 mile Rohrbaugh Trail which winds through forests and through campsites that overlook the Red Creek watershed, Breathed Mountain, and Coal Knob.

The trail has moderate elevation gain compared to other trails in the area and a campsite on top of Harman Mountain with incredible views of the surrounding wilderness .If you’re staying overnight, or headed out on a long day hike, bring along a water filter or purification tablets.
The Monongahela National Forest is an expansive 921,000 acres of outdoor fun! The national forest has more than 800 miles of trails, with nearly 20 designated hiking trails at Spruce Knob alone. Within the forest lies the Smoke Hole Canyon. The “Smoke’s” are very popular for hikers, climbers, and boaters. Explore the 3.5-mile South Branch Trail, a loop trail that follows the river upstream, ascends part way up Cave Mountain, passes fields and old farms on its way back downstream, and then drops back down to the river nearly opposite Shreve’s Store.
One of the most popular hikes in West Virginia is the Seneca Rocks Trail. This 3.5-mile out-and-back trail is well maintained and leads to an observation platform with a gorgeous view of the rock faces. The elevation gain on this hike is over 800 feet. Benches along the trail make great places to catch your breath.
