Get Outside and on the Water

Outdoor enthusiasts will revel in the plethora of recreational opportunities, from hiking and fishing to kayaking along serene waterways. Take a relaxing float along the Blackwater River, whose clear, dark waters are inviting for anglers, hunters, and boaters alike. There are plenty of boat ramps to access the river in Southampton, making for an easily accessible voyage through the ancient tree-lined wetlands. Fish that can be found in the river include striped bass, river herring, redbreast, redear sunfish, and American and hickory shad in the spring. The river also hosts largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, flier, blue catfish, and chain pickerel populations.

The Nottoway River is not to be forgotten. The diverse fishery it hosts means that anglers are sure to catch something good here. The typical shad and herring can be excellent in the spring months, as well as the Roanoke bass, which is a species of special interest in Virginia. Only a few rivers are home to the Roanoke bass, locally known as “rock bass” or “redeye”, but the Nottoway has plenty, with fish over one pound being common. The Southampton County portion is also home to most of the big redear sunfish.

Head to Main Street in Courtland, Virginia for rentals and shopping opportunities at Blackwater Outfitters. Here you can find canoe, kayak, and tube rentals to take on both rivers, as well as guide services to make for an enjoyable day on the water.
