Missing Hiker Found Dead in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

A missing hiker was found deceased in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) this past weekend after disappearing on a solo outing. According to park officials, it appears Ann Houghton had planned to hike on January 28 and 29 in the park’s Smokemount Campground area where her car was found. She was reported missing on February 1 and found by law enforcement and search and rescue teams the next day.

Houghton, 73, was a seasoned park volunteer and experienced hiker, well known in the local outdoor community.

“Ann was an enduring and beloved member of our Smokies Community,” said Charles Sellars, acting superintendent of GSMNP. “She was a dedicated volunteer and avid hiker who shared her passion for the park with many visitors. Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers condolences to her family and friends.”

Houghton volunteered in GSMNP for over 20 years and was nominated by the park for an award for outstanding volunteer service in 2022. Officials have not released information on the cause of Houghton’s death but told USA Today that they do not suspect foul play.
