Trail Mix June 2013: Free Music Playlist

Looking at this month’s Trail Mix free music playlist sparks only one thought . . . . Can it really be this good?

We lead off this month with a brand new track from Pokey LaFarge, a performer who epitomizes American roots music.  Hailing from the banks of the Mississippi River and St. Louis, Pokey – who did some time with one of our favorite local bands, The Hackensaw Boys – delivers a righteous mix of jangling guitar and boom-chick rhythms. We are proud to feature “Central Time” off of Pokey’s latest eponymous release.

June also signals the return to Trail Mix of one of my favorite Southern artists, Jason Isbell.  Isbell has become a leading voice amongst Southern songwriters over the last five years.  Take a listen to “Stockholm” off his brand new record Southeastern.

Two artists here on the June mix have me really excited.  Andrew Duhon’s new record, The Moorings, has not been out of my stereo since I cracked it open a couple weeks ago.  Check out “Rest On Her Shoulder” on the mix.  I am also excited to hear more from Old Man Canyon, out of Vancouver, British Columbia.  These indie folk rockers from the North Country stumbled across my Facebook feed a couple weeks ago; I was thrilled to discover them and absolutely love their EP – which you can snag, for FREE, off of Bandcamp if you take a notion!

Fate has turned June into the month of the bluegrass woman!  Trail Mix has fantastic tracks from the new all girl phenom group Della Mae, Canadian clogging fiddler April Verch, flatpicker Rebecca Frazier, and long time favorite Claire Lynch.  Also check out the new tune from Betse Ellis, long time fiddler for The Wilders.

Trail Mix is featuring some stalwarts on the roots scene this month.  Check out tunes from Donna The Buffalo, now playing together for twenty-plus years, and long time Southern rock faves Drivin N Cryin.  Trail Mix also has a new tune from Solas, arguably the most popular Celtic band touring today, and brand new tracks from guitar giant Delbert McClinton and old time master Bruce Molsky.

Trail Mix is happy to include some tracks from some of favorite hometown bands.  Check out new stuff from The Hermit Kings and Marshall Chapman from Asheville and Chamomile & Whiskey from Charlottesville.  The Green Boys – out of Richmond – are darn near hometown boys for our Charlottesville readers, so we’ll toss them in here, too!

Rounding out Trail Mix this month are brand new tunes from 3 Penny Acre, Joy Kills Sorrow, Annabelle’s Curse, Luke Winslow-King, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, and Ashleigh Flynn.

Again . . . . Can it really be this good?  Can you really grab all these tunes for free?  Yes, indeed!  Stream or download at will.  Share the word.  Buy a record or two.  Catch one of these great artists live when she comes through your town.

As always, thanks for supporting Trail Mix!
