Two outdated dams on Maryland’s Patapsco River will be removed thanks to a $4 million stimulus fund grant awarded to advocacy group American Rivers. The organization will remove the Simkins and Union dams on the lower Patapsco. The dams are over a century old and have proven dangerous for river recreation and obstructive to migratory fish, including the American eel. In addition to opening up more paddling opportunities, the dam removal could also help the Chesapeake Bay. Increased populations of Elliptio complanata, a freshwater mussel that naturally filters and purifies water, will be able to reach the vital eastern waterway via the Patapsco.
