This viral video of a driver colliding with a cyclist on Tennessee’s Natchez Trace Parkway is making national headlines today.
The rider, Tyler Noe, was making his way along the parkway with fellow cycler Greg Goodman, who filmed the incident using a helmet-mounted GoPro camera, when a white truck approached from behind, blaring his horn as he maneuvered around the two cyclists.
Shortly after the truck passed Noe and Goodman, a second vehicle driven by 58-year-old Marshall Grant Neely III, collided with Noe before accelerating and leaving the scene.
According to multiple news outlets, Neely was an administrator of a private school in Nashville but has since been placed on leave. He was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment after the footage of the hit and run came to light and subsequently released on bail.
Noe was treated at a local hospital shortly after the collision took place.
According to the Washington Post, the cyclist has suffered multiple bruises and is still waiting on X-rays to determine wether or not he sustained fractures to his leg.
“The Natchez Trace Parkway is a designated bicycle route, and bicycle traffic increases dramatically on the weekends and holidays,” Acting Chief Ranger Calvin Farmer said in the statement. “In Mississippi and Tennessee, bicyclists are allowed to use the full lane of traffic to ride in when necessary. Federal regulations require bicyclists to ride single file, and riders are encouraged to move to the right to allow for vehicles to pass. It is also highly recommended riders wear high-visibility clothing and flashing front and rear lights. Vehicle drivers must provide a safe distance when overtaking and passing a bicyclist.”
