“Summer Cycle ’17” is an annual event for Asheville locals to join together for cycling in the heart of the city’s greenways along the French Broad River.
The event will be held July 29 for people of all skill levels and the course can be tailored based on each individual’s desired mileage and elevation gain.
Hosted by Asheville on Bikes and presented by Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty and JAG & Associates Construction, the cycling course will wind through Asheville’s thriving River Arts District as well as the business district and neighborhoods of West Asheville.
The course spans a full distance of 12.6 miles and climbs a total of 698 feet, but can be altered to be under 3 miles if desired by the rider. Beginning at French Broad Outfitters, the bikers will complete three miles of winding alongside the French Broad Greenway before connecting to Waynesville Road where the climb to West Asheville begins.
Once reaching West Asheville, riders have the freedom to choose their own path.
Choices range from pedaling flatter, straight terrain or riders can alternately aim for a more challenging cycle of twists, turns, and higher elevation gains. The ride will come to a celebratory end at the same start point of French Broad Outfitters by way of Hominy Creek Greenway.
Participants are encouraged by the organizers to review the route map, have a bicycle in good working condition, and ride with a water bottle, lights, and a bike bell. Front and rear lights are also suggested since the ride will take place during the late afternoon.
Want to get in on the action? Tune up your bike and hit the course at the end of the month!
