Outside magazine has name Richmond, Va. the best river town in America. The Virginia capital city won the title thanks to the massive efforts over the past four decades to clean up the James River and transform the once polluted river system into a mecca of outdoor water activities. Richmond beat out the other 10 finalists, including such well-known river cities as Missoula, Montana and Nevada City, California, to claim the number one spot. Over 20,000 readers from the finalist cities cast their votes online to decide the winner. With 46 percent of the votes received, Richmond became the surprise winner for being the most serious about recreation and environmental stewardship.
