Paddle the Tallulah Clayton, Ga. • April For the first two weekends in April, dam releases of the Tallulah River create class IV-V waterfalls and drops like Oceana and Bridal Veil. Apply for a permit to paddle the river, or watch from atop the 1,000-foot gorge rim.

Practice Trail Magic Franklin, N.C. • April 1-2 Most northbound thru-hikers are thinking about calling it quits by the time they arrive in North Carolina in April. For six years, the town of Franklin in Western North Carolina has been holding a party for the hikers who keep forging ahead. Show up and give out some Twinkies.

Party in a van, down by the river Hot Springs, N.C.• April 29-May 1 The French Broad River Festival includes bike and boat races, and it brings Reverend Horton Heat, Acoustic Syndicate, and Larry Keel to the trail town of Hot Springs, N.C.
