Brotherly Love: G. Love Heads to the Mountains with the Avett Brothers

Why did you decide to rework Bukka White’s traditional “Fixin’ to Die” and center the album around it? “Fixin’ to Die” is a song I’ve been playing for years. I actually learned it from Bob Dylan’s first record, but my version has always taken on a life of its own. I revived it last summer, when I did a solo acoustic tour opening for Jack Johnson. When I brought it to the Avetts, they added the big kick-drum clap beat in the beginning that almost sounds like Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” I was apprehensive at first, but I decided to keep an open mind. It was a unique approach that ended up being awesome.
