A number of universities across the country are implementing bike share programs in an attempt to reduce the number of cars on campus and create a cycling culture. Mercer University in Georgia rehabbed 60 donated bikes to create a fleet of wheels students can rent for a week at a time. Emory University in Atlanta currently has 50 rental bikes and six checkout points throughout campus where students and faculty can borrow bikes at no charge. Several universities in the Northeast have even begun giving bikes free bikes to college freshmen. The bikes have the students’ names painted on them to cut down on theft.
