In-Town Mining

For decades, strip mining has devastated Appalachian communities, poisoned waterways, and destroyed  mountains. Now, A&G Coal Company wants to blast Ison Rock Ridge within the town limits of Appalachia, Va. Local citizens are alarmed at the proposal. Homes will suffer from blasting damages and community roads will be more dangerous and will be damaged due to increased truck traffic. They are especially concerned about Preacher Creek, Callahan Creek, Looney Creek and other streams in close proximity to the permit area, and the possible health impacts that will occur from the blasting dust, truck dust, and fugitive dust that will invade the community from the job site.

A hearing on the proposed in-town mining will be held Tuesday, January 27 at 6pm at the DMLR offices in Big Stone Gap, Room No. 218 and 219.
