According to the New York Times, India has been scouting the purchase of coal mines in Appalachia. While domestic coal companies continue to decimate the local landscape through mountaintop removal mining, India’s interest could be even more devastating. The country already imports 50 million tons of coal every year to meet expanding energy needs, and apparently purchasing mines abroad is part of plan to ensure demand is guaranteed for the future.
