With the slumping economy, camping has experienced a dramatic resurgence. Overnight backpacking jumped 18.5% last year, according to a report from the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. The ease, simplicity, and affordability of camping–especially on public lands–have made it an attractive vacation option for frugal Americans. The report estimated there are 33.7 million campers in the country, and analysts expect that number to continue to increase this year.
