In an effort to boost the local economy of Southwest Virginia, the newly created Southwest Regional Recreation Authority is working on bringing a new trail network to the region. Dubbed the Spearhead Trails, because the area of the Commonwealth looks like a spear on a map, the system is being pursued as a way to increase tourism and add new jobs. According to an article in the Richmond-Times Dispatch the multi-use trails will be created for hikers, biker, equestrians, and off-road vehicles and linked to the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System in West Virginia.
