Plastic bags don’t fully decompose for millenia. A high school kid discovered bacteria that break it down in less than three months.

Daniel Burd, a junior at a high school science fair in Waterloo, Ontario, mixed a plastic bag with landfill dirt, tap water, and yeast to isolate two specialized bacteria that decompose plastics. Using these bacteria on an industrial scale could revolutionize our waste stream.
