When it comes to appreciating the fall weather, there’s no better place to soak it all in than the trails, beaches, and waterways of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Explore miles of trails by bike or foot through maritime forests, marshes, and wetlands. Fall is a particularly special time to visit as you are sure to see migratory birds making their way south for the winter along the Atlantic Flyway route. Walk along the beach looking for shells and crabs, or book a boat cruise to take in the sights and sounds, view the wild ponies, and learn about the history of the island. Over a dozen outfitters in town offer a variety of bike and boat rentals, as well as guided tours, to help you get the most out of your visit.

Keep the fun going when you’re done in the refuge as you head into town for a taste of the island. Stop into the Museum of Chincoteague Island to learn more about the people, culture, and heritage of the area through a variety of exhibits and displays or browse the diverse local shops, featuring everything from antiques and books to artwork, t-shirts, and beyond, for a token to remember your trip by.

When it comes to grabbing a bite to eat on the island, you can’t go wrong no matter what time of day it is. Start your morning off with a melt-in-your-mouth pastry and spike of caffeine from AmaRin or a fresh donut and smoothie from Sandy Pony Donuts. Order food to eat on the go for lunch, like sandwiches from Sea Star Carryouts Eats and pizza from Maria’s Family Restaurant. Of course, a trip to Chincoteague wouldn’t be complete without trying the local catch at one of the island’s many seafood restaurants, including Don’s Seafood, The Village Restaurant, and AJ’s on the Creek. For a post-dinner treat, Mister Whippy’s and Island Creamery offer two different styles of delicious ice cream while Build Your Own Cookie allows you to customize your dessert to the max.

At the end of the day, you’re going to want a place where you can kick back, relax, and prepare for another day on the island. Luckily, there are options for everyone, no matter your budget and style of travel. From campgrounds and motels to waterfront cottage rentals, you’re sure to find accommodations that fit your trip.

The fall schedule is also packed with unique events that highlight the best of the island. The Plein Air Art Show and Sale on September 11 is an excellent time to pick up a painting that captures the beauty of Chincoteague while supporting artists from across the region. On September 25, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company will be hosting its 21st Annual Chili/Chowder Cookoff & Car Show. Featuring a wide variety of food and drink options, craft vendors, and live music, the whole family will love this high-energy event with lots to keep everyone entertained. Celebrate arrival of oyster season at the 48th Annual Chincoteague Oyster Festival on October 9. Try an array of raw, steamed, frittered, and single fried oysters, plus enjoy cold beverages and live music throughout the afternoon. Keep an eye on the events calendar for other opportunities, including a weekly farmers and artisans market, art classes, and more.
