Skiing and partying. Partying and skiing. As any retro ski movie from the 80’s will teach you, it’s a classic combination much like peanut butter and jelly, or perhaps more fittingly, whiskey and Coke. It’s the recipe for some of the best weekends you’ll never remember. The biggest party of the season is right around the corner at Snowshoe Mountain’s Ballhooter Spring Break Festival, presented by Coca-Cola.
This season marks Snowshoe’s 6th year hosting “Ballhooter”, an annual festival featuring free concerts, spring break-themed parties and shenanigans, and the best spring skiing in the region. Past performances at the festival have included Big Gigantic, Theory of a Deadman, and the Dropkick Murphy’s. This year, the lineup of free concerts in Snowshoe’s mountaintop village includes hard rockers Clutch and CKY.
The mountain may be situated in the “National Radio Quiet Zone” but rest assured, both Clutch and CKY will have the village rocking on Saturday night. Headlining will be Clutch, the veteran Frederick Maryland hard rock band that is no stranger to echoing sonic blasts in the hills of West Virginia. Taking the village stage before them will be the one and only CKY, a rock band of MTV fame from Pennsylvania. The weekend will also feature performances from Nappy Roots and Love Canon at the Connection Nightclub.

If you’re more concerned about the snow conditions than the concerts or the parties, fear not. Ask any Snowshoe local what the best month of the season is and they’ll tell you. For at least the last several years, it’s been March by a longshot. In 2018, the mountain received 88” of snow in March, more than all the rest of that season combined. When folks think about spring skiing they usually picture t-shirts and sunglasses, mild weather and slushy snow. That hasn’t been the case in recent years. It’s been more like what you’d expect to see in the heart of winter, with the “Cheat Mountain Magic” producing powder days galore. There’s no guarantee that this March will follow suit, but there’s plenty of reason for optimism.
In summary, if you’re looking for a truly Wild & Wonderful weekend this March, Snowshoe’s Ballhooter Spring Break Festival has you covered. Head to www.snowshoemtn.com and plan your trip to the mountain for a weekend of FREE village concerts, partying, awesome skiing, partying, crazy spring break games, and probably some more partying.
