Enjoy a Fall Getaway to Nature’s Mountain Playground

Boasting high mountain peaks, cascading rivers and beautiful waterfalls, every direction in Pocahontas County leads to an uncommon adventure. Enjoy Autumn in the Alleghenies this year with a fall getaway to Nature’s Mountain Playground.

The vibrant foliage is best seen from the open roads. Our sprawling roadways follow the natural mountain peaks, winding valleys and flowing rivers of the area and will lead you to captivating landscapes and famous attractions. Follow the twists and turns of the Highland Scenic Highway for stunning seasonal vistas. As you wind through the colorful turns, discover incredible views of the mountains and surrounding countryside. Looking to explore? Stop along the way at popular hiking spots like Honeycomb Rocks and High Rocks Trail. And make sure to snap an epic autumn panoramic photo at the Big Spruce Overlook.

With a total of 214 hiking trails covering nearly 800 miles, over 340 miles of mountain biking routes and a host of pristine fishing streams and cascading waterfalls, you could spend days in the Monongahela National Forest and still not experience it all. Pocahontas County contains more than one-third of the 900,000-acre forest and the “Mon” (as the locals call it) is home to many remarkable local attractions, including Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, Falls of Hills Creek, Cranberry Backcountry, Honeycomb Rocks, Cranberry Wilderness Area, Highland Scenic Highway and Cranberry Mountain Nature Center. Escape the crowds and reconnect with nature as you trek through this off-the-grid oasis. No matter the trail you choose, visitors will find amazing views and West Virginia wildlife, so don’t forget to pack your binoculars and cameras. Picnic areas and visitor centers are also located throughout the forest.

Visit our state parks and forests as they come alive with striking autumn hues. Walk through nature at the beautiful, yet unusual, Beartown State Park. Go for a hike or mountain bike ride and experience the diverse terrain of Watoga State Park. Climb to the top of the Lookout Tower at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park for unbeatable views. Or spend some time in the untouched great outdoors in Seneca State Forest for peace and solitude.

For a next-level leaf-peeping experience that the whole family is sure to love, hop aboard a train excursion with Mountain Rail Adventures. There is no better way to take in the beauty of our rugged peaks and inspiring scenery than a leisurely train ride. These trips take you high into the mountains for spectacular views from some of the highest points in the state! From the Durbin Rocket to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, find the perfect route for you and your family.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort also offers plenty of family-friendly fall fun! Ride the lift and take in the foliage from 4,848 feet in elevation, tackle some downhill mountain biking or enjoy the countless hiking opportunities around the resort.

There’s always something going on in Nature’s Mountain Playground! Attend one of our fall festivals – West Virginia RoadKill Cook-Off and the Autumn Harvest Festival (September 24), Cranberry Shindig (September 25), and Huntersville Traditions Day (September 30).
