The footprints of novice and experienced hikers can be found all over Grant County. We are blessed with some of the best hiking trails in West Virginia. The North Fork Mountain Trail which is approximately 24 miles long is ideal for a 2 to 3-day backpacking trip that is full of wildlife and amazing scenery.
One of the most popular destinations on the North Fork Mountain Trail is Chimney Rock. This hidden gem in the Mon Forest provides one of the best views in the state. Start at the North Fork Trailhead on Smoke Hole Road, just off North Fork Highway not far from Cabins, West Virginia. It’s a strenuous 5.5-mile hike with an extra steep scramble right at the end, but the views from the top are worth the effort.
Within the Mon Forest lies the Smoke Hole Canyon. The “Smoke’s” are very popular for hikers, climbers, and boaters. Explore the 3.5-mile South Branch Trail, a loop trail that follows the river upstream, ascends part way up Cave Mountain, passes fields and old farms on its way back downstream, and then drops back down to the river nearly opposite Shreve’s Store.
The Petersburg area is well-known for our epic hiking and biking trails that attract thousands of visitors to our mountains each year. But we are also blessed with amazing river trails perfect for kayaking, canoeing, or just a leisurely float.
The Hopeville Canyon is one of the best paddling pleasures in West Virginia. The North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac flows through the canyon creating about five miles of Class III river perfect for adventure kayaking.
For a classic float/fishing trip, the long and beautiful Smoke Hole Canyon features massive rock formations and great camping spots. The rapids are a consistent Class I – II with a couple Class II+, so the paddling is easy and relaxing.
